When I was pregnant with my son I was drinking 1 whole bottle of V8 fusion everyday, so I would get the whole days worth of veggies and fruits, but I gained about 12-15 lbs in 21 days. So Im trying to convince my dad that drinking a V8 fusion each day will help fatten him up, and that its worth the $ 4.00 a bottle. My dad has had major bed sores/ decubudis ulcers, SO bad that he had to have reconstructive surgery, they said that they were so bad that there wasnt even a number to describe the deteriorization. They have a scale of 1-5, but they would write that his were 6 or 7. When you get bedsores once, you fight them for life, and the way to prevent them is to have fat protecting your bones, hips, tail bone, pelvic bone, your butt, arms, legs, head... etc. But now my dad is 5'10, parapaligic, so he doesnt move around enough to prevent them, and he weighs 112 lbs, he just told me this last night. I am heart broken I dont know what to do. I am so worried. My dad is very depressed and with all his pain, and meds, he has a really hard time staying awake, moving around, he cant remember to change positions every 15 minutes. His bed sores are doing great right now, thats not my number 1 fear, its the lack of weight, fat, and muscle, that has me terrified. I am 27, I weigh so much more than my dad, and Im 5'6 I am so worried. Can anyone help me out with a plan, some way to put weight on him. A way to get him active? Im trying to get him to come with me to my gym where they do physical therapy aswell! I know that is what he needs. Also my dad has money for food, but now that I dont live with him, he barely eats, and never eats healthy unless he eats with me and my family. I make him food and tell him to heat it up and eat it, and freeze some, but he forgets about it... well thats what he says anyways. I dont know but I believe that he just doesnt think about eating when Im not around. He just makes a bed on his living room floor, with huge cushions, and sits there all day, and even sleeps there. He has a bedroom and a spare room but he says that his bed is to small and uncomfortable, because its a hospital bed, twin sized with a plastic mattress. So im trying to talk him into getting a new mattress and boxspring, but he is the type that wont do it unless I do to, and I dont have the money right now. He and I have always been very close and he is having a hard time on his own, he misses me soooo much. But he wants to spend time with me with out my husband, you know like old times. So its hard. But anyone who has had a loved one or person they cared for needing to gain weight, and be more active, please help. How can he get enough energy to get things done? Probably with food, thats what I think.
Mistify-
Thanks for the time and information. My dad currently gets vanilla Carnations high calorie drinks sent to his home directly, the first time they delivered cases, he would drink 3 a day as prescribed. Then his neighbor told him she gets choc. flavored Ensure and she sold them to him, he liked those better, but his have higher calories. So he did the drinks for a little while, then it became old and he still has a bunch in his fridge from the 1st shipment. He never had them reorder the following shipments. Now he doesnt even think about them. He drinks cola all day long, junk food, pizza, and McDonalds double cheese burgers. I want to get him healthy, but I know that I have to get involved in what ever I can figure out, because he wont stick to it if I dont do it with him. He see's his Doctor regularly, and he takes antidepressants, pain meds, muscle relaxers, but he is so immobile, unhealthy, has no energy, & rarely eats. He has a lot of bad habits, Im trying to help him with.
Best answer:
First things first...if your dad is loosing weight, he does need to see a physician. Rapid unexplained weightloss can be the sign of a more serious underlying medical condition.
Since he has bed sores, he most likely needs a high calorie, high protein diet. However, this should be discussed with his physician.
Regarding V-8 fusion, this is probably a poor choice because is has no protein and is relatively low in calories and high in carbohydrates...something he will probably burn off too easily. A better choice will most likely be a nutritional supplement such as boost which is a higher calorie, high protein drink.
Next, regarding the sleep surface, it is probably a significant contributing factor. Due to his medical history and current bed sores, he probably is in need of a pressure relief mattress. If he already has a hosptial bed in place, I would discuss with his health care provider and the DME vendor about upgrading his mattress..it will probably still be a twin size, but he really needs to be on a pressure relief mattress...especially if he is non compliant with pressure relief techniques.
Finally is the true heart of the matter. Your dad has some overt signs of clinical depression. This may need to be addressed on both a medical and behavioral stand point.
Please take him to his physician and discuss all these matters.
Best wishes.
Addendum: I would recommend behavioral therapy in addition to medical held for his depression...he needs counseling, not just medication.
