Using Medicine Balls to Lose Weight and Sculpt Your Abs

Article by Anthony

Are you frustrated by the amount of fitness information that's on the web? I know I used to be. Most of it is misleading, wrong, or only partially true. I hope to correct that here.

One of the fitness underdogs in the gym that's rarely used (and that's a shame) is the medicine ball. Medicine balls are weighted balls about the size of a basketball or maybe a little smaller. They can weigh anywhere from 2 to 20 pounds and many of them are printed in kilograms so be aware of that for conversion purposes.

The reason that most people don't use medicine balls for their fitness needs is because they don't know how to use them. I didn't know how until a few months ago. But now I use two med ball exercises that work for me - they get you in great cardiovascular shape because they focus on rapid movements, they tone and sculpt your body (especially your abs!), and they improve your health. Let's talk about these two exercises so the next time you're in the gym you know how to use a medicine ball.

First, the haybale exercise. This is a great all around exercise that is part squat, part ab workout. Get a 6 - 12 pound med ball (base this number on your current fitness level). Hold it in front of you and squat down and let it bounce on the ground. After it bounces up to you, pick it up and lift it with a twisting motion up above your head and to the left. Then bring it down and squat again, letting it bounce and repeat the motion only on your right side this time. That is a haybale.

Next is my favorite ab exercise: the v-up. This is a must-have in your workout routine for six pack abs. Hold a 4-8 pound med ball in front of your chest while lying on your back. Now, contract your abs and while keeping your legs straight, scrunch up so your body forms a V. Reach up and hold the medicine ball close to your feet. Slowly come down and repeat. Try 10 reps and your abs will be screaming!

These exercises are crucial to sculpt a great six pack, lose weight, and feel great. I've used them in my own workouts with great results. I hope they also work for you!
