Best way to do "sets" with weights?

Question by Gohan Reborn: Best way to do "sets" with weights?
I'm currently trying to lose weight and gain muscle. I do not want to end up looking like one of those super massive men, who are really strong but look...huge...like the Kingpin?

Trying to get best shape I can. I've been heading to the gym, everyday. One day I do upper body (Biceps, Triceps, Shoulders, Chest etc.) and other day I do lower body. I do the Bike everyday for 30-40 minutes.

What's the best way for doing weights? I've been doing 2 sets of 12 for each machine, at a weight that I can handle. The Personal trainer at the gym has suggested doing a significantly lower amount (About half) of the weight but doing 2 sets of 24 (12 Slow, and 12 Fast).
