I am new to working out and the trainer set the machines up for me with what seems like the maximum range of motion and the machine times me so that I have to spend at least 1 second up and down -- and try to go slower than that because I thought you were supposed to . But I see people -- especially men -- doing very fast short up and down lifts with a narrow range of motion. What are they doing and why? Is this a legitimate alternative? ( not that I'm planning on trying it.)

Those guys are trying to add muscle mass to their bodies. Their only real concern is with their body's appearance. Doing a lot of reps with less weight builds muscle, but not strength. If you want strength, you lift fewer reps with heavier weight. Go slowly and steadily, like you said, so that your muscles are trained for smooth motion under strain. Going slower requires more work to control your motions, which helps add strength to your muscle. The limited range of motion is because they are trying to work out only one particular muscle or group of muscles to bulk it up in size, and to increase the tone. Its like they're pumping up a bike tire. If you continue with slow, evenly controlled reps with the weight schedule your trainer gives you, you may not be as chiseled in appearance as those other guys, but you'll probably be more sturdy and stronger in time.
