What kind of workout is this?

At the gym today i saw to guys benching, but they were doing really weird sets.
They would put like 250lbs on the bar
one would walk around for a minute and hype up
then he would lay down to bench. grab it.
the other guy would ask if he is ready.
then he lifts it puts it down brings it back up and places it back on the holders.

then they would add more weight do the same thing, then drop it back down, and repeat.
I was wondering why would they only do 1 rep and is this an effective method of working out?


Best answer:
It could be to prime the nervous system. Working their way up to a bigger load. It's really effective for strength training and to increase their weights from week to week.

Try it some time.
