Question by : How can I get my pullup/pushup reps back up?
A bit of background: Starting around 8th grade, I began casual calisthenics including several hundred pushups a day and a few hundred pullups; my max for pushups was around 90 consecutive and pullups was 25 by the time I was a freshman.
However, I still looked like a tiny, weak little kid so I started lifting weights which helped me get a bit more muscular. By my sophomore year of high school, I had completely stopped my calisthenic routine.
Now about to be a junior and with hopes of joining a service academy next year (between West Point / Army or New London / Coast Guard), I need my physical fitness at top levels now more than ever so I've started doing calisthenics again.Even after a couple weeks of practicing these skills, I still struggle to do just 20 pushups and can hardly do 5 pullups.
I thought that it might be easier for me to get back up to my high reps since I had already once had the strength and endurance but it seems like I am starting completely from scratch. Any advice on how I can reclaim my former glory and get back into shape?
Best answer:
Do pushups. It's that simple. Start low and go up as it gets easy
