i can only put like 70 pounds on it then lift it a few times so im wondering if its because the bar wieghs alot.

any good olymic size bar will weigh 45 pounds. Now if it is a regular standard bar it weighs next to nothing. if you dont have any weights on it place it on a scale and see what you come up with
