Question by Yahoo: All this working out CAN'T make me fatter can it?
If over exercising causes your body stress, and to release coritol and save your fat..is that true?
Is this only if you are lifting weights?
I do jillian Michaels (cardio + 5 lb weights) and Turbo Jam (pure cardio with weighted gloves but it's not really weight training) and the arc trainer (cardio..)
I can't imagine that by doing this I'm going to get fatter....sigh...help me.. :/
If it causes so much stress..why do the people on the biggest loser lose sooo much weight...
I feel like some days I'm working out more than they do
Best answer:
Heh. You have to do a lot more than Jillian Michaels' "cardio" to get a surge in cortisol.
Yes, ANY stress on your body will increase cortisol, exercise included. HOWEVER, the effects of cortisol are greatly over-rated in a normal context. Unless you're a runner, someone burning more than 500Kcal @ exercise a day, you'll be fine.
Keep your workouts less than 1 hour and you can blunt your cortisol release (also, 1000mg of Vit. C after a workout can really help reduce the release of this hormone too). More cortisol is released at sleep than during moderate exercise.
Yes, cortisol will help your body store fat, and break down muscle... But here's the thing, if your body burns 300Kcal to complete some exercise... And you have a surge of cortisol - you'll still end up burning MORE grams of fat than if you didn't work out, as the energy for those 300Kcal has to come from somewhere. Cortisol helps your body conserve energy, but unless you like to do hill sprints before eating a whole pizza, you're never going to store MORE fat from exercise.
