Weight reduction is a known risk factor for hip bone loss in elderly men and women (Hannan et al, 2000). However, the relationship between voluntary weight loss and bone loss in elderly men is not known. Ensrud and colleagues (2005) recently looked prospectively at a cohort of patients enrolled in the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study to determine if there was an association between voluntary weight loss in older men and increased hip bone loss.
