The Olympic Weight Bar for Champion Training
Article by Shawn Manaher
Serious weightlifters need a strict training regimen, proper diet, and the right gear. This will ensure success in competition and for personal achievement. Two essential pieces of equipment are an Olympic weight bar and a medicine ball.
An Olympic weight bar is different from a general bar. The Olympic weight bar has a sleeve that allows the weight plates to rotate as the bar is being lifted. This eliminates the momentum granted to the lifter when he or she is doing powerful lifting. Raising the bar up and over the head is much more difficult with an Olympic weight bar.
Women also use an Olympic weight bar in competition. The design is the same as the bar for men, but there are some dimensional differences. A bar for women weightlifters is shorter and lighter by about 33 pounds. It also has a smaller grip area.
This bar is used in most major weightlifting competitions. It is a good idea to practice and train with it if an athlete is planning on lifting competitively. Powerlifting also uses a bar similar to the Olympic bar, except the dimensions are slightly different to accommodate the extra weight load.
A medicine ball is great for working out the abdominals. General weightlifting does not accommodate this area very well. It can also help develop balance, which will greatly help in lifting.
One medicine ball exercise for the abdominals is a basic sit up performed while holding the ball. Find something to brace the feet against. This can be a partner holding the ankles, or a device designed for this purpose. Keep the ball snug against the chest. This will prevent the arms from being engaged. Perform two standard sit ups, on the way back up twist to the left and then right. This will work the entire abdominal area.
To work on balance, get into position to perform a push up. Place the ball just under the sternum. Place hands on the ball in the shape of a diamond. Pop into push up position, and perform push ups while maintaining balance on the medicine ball. These will work the triceps while developing good balance.
Using the right equipment will prepare weightlifters for competition. It takes tough conditioning and perseverance. Develop the skills to succeed in weightlifting!
