I currently wear a messenger bag just above the butt and across my back to my college everyday.
I carry a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop (about 9lbs)
A binder (2 lbs)
Other junk (1 lb)
Is this safe for my back? or should I just switch to a 2-strap backpack?

You are carrying more then 10 pounds, I imagine you occasionaly have to carry a book to school which probably brings it closer to 20 pounds, this is not safe in any bag. If you have to carry it shorten the strap, the longer it is the more pressure it exerts.
