If you saw your neighbor jumping rope in the laundry room around 5 a.m. in the morning, what would you think?

Question by LovingSoul: If you saw your neighbor jumping rope in the laundry room around 5 a.m. in the morning, what would you think?
I can't afford a gym membership or fitness equipment right now. I also live above an elderly woman, who is very noise conscious, so exercise tapes for cardio is out of the question. Thus, I plan to jump rump for my cardio each morning, and train with free weights at home. Winter is coming, so I can't jump outside, nor would I want to be that visible anyway. So I'm planning to jump rope in the building laundry room early in the morning before most people wake up. The floor is concrete, and it's very large, spacious, and well lit. I'm sure someone may walk in on me at least once before the year is over, though it's unlikely at the crack of dawn(around 5 a.m.). What would you think if you found out your ADULT neighbor was jumping rope in the laundry room before the birds woke up? LOL
There are also windows and a waiting area in the laundry room, so it's not isolated and dark like most basement laundry areas.
I'm also carrying extra weight, so I'm sure it will be a sight to see. :)

It doesn't matter where you live, the basement is typically below ground and in many cases at or below the water table. This puts the constant worry or potential for moisture to exist in the basement. At the very least your basement floor is in close proximity to moisture. Worst case - you have some moisture exposure to your basement floor in your finish basement. Because of this exposure to moisture, what's the best bet for basement flooring?

Concrete - The major benefit here is that it's already there in your basement. Not only is concrete the most moisture-hardy type of floor you can manage but it requires the least amount of materials to finish and requires no real subfloor. The primary work will be in fixing cracks before you paint or seal it.

Concrete does have its drawbacks as it requires some pretty labor intensive cleaning before you can do any painting or sealing. Also if you stick with the existing concrete floor you are in for some chilly feet as there is no way to properly warm the floor.

Custom Tile - Of all the options for finishing your basement with a nice floor, tile gives you the best of all the worlds. It's is the most durable finished surface you can install and will stand up to water almost as readily as concrete. Tile dries easily and, can be fixed right to the concrete (no subfloor) and as such gives you the ability to install in-floor heating to keep your toes cozy.

The downside with installing tile is that if you don't install in-floor radiant heating (a costly option that contributes to energy costs) you still have a cold floor. Likewise, you will need to level and repair your concrete floor before you fix tile to it or you risk tiles breaking loose under walking weight.

Vinyl Flooring - Vinyl flooring can be installed as either tiles or in rolls, and although it may not seem as durable at first glance it holds up quite well, even compared to concrete or tile. The main benefit is that with vinyl you have a virtually seamless floor with excellent water proofing, and it isalso very affordable and easy to install.

But again there is the inevitable down side. The concrete floor will have to be cleaned extensively and leveled or you run the risk of having the vinyl separate from the floor or in extreme cases be cracked or torn if installed over a defect in the floor that can cause shearing.

Carpet - Carpet is a fantastic choice for the basement if you want comfort, and it's one of the warmest choices to take care of your feet. This is the best way to make your basement feel like an extension of your living space and given most open floor plans it can be easy to install.

Keep in mind that carpet absorbs moisture and can retain it, creating problems of mold and mildew. Carpet will dry out however but this often requires industrial drying equipment if you want it to happen quickly to avoid a musty basement.

Another point to consider when planning your basement remodel with your general contractor is that you are not confined to just one flooring type. If you have multiple areas with different functions you can choose multiple flooring types, such as a carpeted play room and vinyl flooring or tile in the utility room. Your contractor should be very knowledgeable about the various flooring options and their input could be invaluable during the planning stages, don't be afraid to ask them for advice.
