Training Gloves - Not Jut for the Pros!

Article by Mike Smith

Training gloves are not just for professional boxers, they are for anyone that wants to learn the proper way to throw a punch without destroying your hand. Most people think that these gloves are there to protect the person that is getting hit. They are supposed to protect your hands. All those little bones in your hand are fragile and the constant abuse can really cause some damage.

These gloves come in many different sizes and colors. Which size is right for you? Let's break them down.

Training gloves are classified by weight. Typically you'll find them in the following weight classifications.

10 Ounces 12 Ounces 14 Ounces 16 Ounces

Now that you know the different sizes, how do you know which one is right for you? It is pretty simple really. The heavier the glove, the more protection it will provide. If you're a beginner, I would suggest a pair of 14 ounce or 16 ounce gloves. They will offer the most protection and teach you the proper way to punch without hurting yourself. Professional boxers use 10 ounce gloves and for sparring, 16 ounce gloves have become the standard.

Now you have another choice. Do you want lace up gloves, or Velcro? This is more or less a personal preference because they both will get the job done. Lace gloves were used in the beginning but lacing up a pair of gloves by yourself is almost impossible. I prefer Velcro.

As if all of these choices were not enough, you also have your choice of colors. They range from black to pink and everywhere in between. If you are going to be putting on some training gloves, make sure that you have some hand wraps.
