When I do flat bench, I use more weight, but never feel anything in my lats the next day.

Flat Bench Press isolates the chest muscles much more, depending on the spacing of your hands. Your push ups, due to your hand position, may be a bit wider, therefore working your lats a bit more. If you adjust your hands while doing push ups, you can target other muscles as well.
