Question by japanesegum11: How do I escape starvation mode?
I've run my body through the mill. First, I went on medication that I think contributed to a lot of weight gain. In response to this, I restricted my food intake and refused to eat anything deemed "unhealthy." After losing absolutely no weight even with exercise incorporated, I got frustrated and in order to stay on this plan I started what some people know as chewing&spitting (basically I'd buy a ton of sweets and chew them up and spit them out. Terribly gross and wasteful, I know) in order to relieve stress, depression, etc.

It took SO MUCH hard work to stop chew&spit, it's a terribly addicting habit and made me isolate myself, naturally. I'm free from it...But I am STILL stuck!

I'm really interested in nutrition and have come to realize through research that I must be in "starvation mode." basically I was following a pretty poor vegan diet (seeing as I'm in college there aren't many options) and ate, and this is probably overestimating, 900-1200 calories a day. The foods I ate were very healthy/not processed (besides soy products) but I think a lack of protein and overexercising made my body look unsightly, as I have absolutely no muscle, just a thin coating of cellulite, even on my stomach, which is THIN! In other words...I'm "skinny-fat." The worst kind.

I am a 19 year old female and I'm 5'10". I refuse to weigh myself because I get crippling depression but I'm guessing at the moment I weigh 140-145. "healthy," I know, but my frame is quite small so 130 looks the best on me.

I found a calculator which says my BMR would be 1525 calories. DEFINITELY wasn't eating this much, and that's not even including exercise! I feel like an idiot for doing this to myself.

How do I escape starvation mode without massive weight gain? I'm scared gaining will just cause me to restrict again. Also, although I don't like eating animal products, I'm willing to include some fish in my diet for protein. MAYBE eggs. Hoping that will help build muscle to fight cellulite. Should the calories be introduced slowly? Should I try "calorie cycling," like eat my normal for one day, 1600 the next, normal the next, etc? I've read that might help. Also, if I gain, how quickly should it take for my metabolism to get used to my new intake so I can lose?

Whenever I see a thin person eating copious amounts of cookies I want to screeeeam!

Thanks for the time!

Best answer:
From what I've read, you should up your calories slowly over time and at the same time, gear your fitness routine so you build up your muscles at the same time.

But I would encourage you to get professional advice. Ask your doctor for a referral to a dietistion or nutritionist.

What do you think? Answer below!
