Male, 42, 5'10, 195 lbs down from 215 lbs 4 months ago. I still have about 10-15 pounds and a couple inches around the waste to reach my goal. I've been heavy on the cardio and light on the weights due to a neck injury. Neck is better and I want to start making the weights half my routine. I still have fat to loose (main Priority) and I'm afraid if I start using protein shakes, I will halt my progress or gain the weight back on.

As long as you get your total protein count of 200 grams every single day you are good to go. Using carbs to manipulate insulin levels is a different story.
