Pros and Cons of Different Types of Hardwood Flooring

Article by Ronald Hart

Hardwood flooring is available in three different types: engineered hardwood, solid hardwood, and plastic laminate. The decision of which type is right for you will be guided by budget, installation method, where in your home you will install the flooring. Your personal preference will also influence your decision.

The first type is solid hardwood. Many people prefer the continuous look achieved with the longer plank lengths, as opposed to that of laminate which has an overall patterned look. This kind of floor intensifies the structural strength of the floor and can last for years due to its tongue and groove mechanism. However, this mechanism makes installation take longer. Solid hardwood is a thicker floor choice which makes dealing with sub floor disproportions in an easier affair than with thinner floor choices. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished as many as seven separate times. Thus, repairing this type of floor is less expensive than the other choices, which would have to be replaced. This floor is moisture sensitive, however, and is not a good choice for areas with high moisture.

Engineered hardwood floors are constructed of many glued layers of thin plywood with soft plywood or hardwood at the core. A thicker hardwood veneer is attached to the outer surface, giving this floor a life expectancy of thirty to one hundred years. It makes a better choice for moist areas, though it will often be more expensive than solid hardwood choices. A staple gun is used to install this floor type and installation is so simple that many people choose to install the floor themselves. Some types of this floor choice can be sanded and repaired after damage.

Plastic laminate floors are actually a photograph of wood on a fiberboard core. The photograph is sealed with a high strength coating of plastic and is put together over a layer of foam. Plastic laminate floors are glued or simply held down by its own weight. This floor is often a choice for busy rooms due to its durability with foot traffic. This is the least expensive and easiest to install of the wood floor options, however, damage cannot be repaired with resanding and refinishing.

A wide assortment of choices is available when deciding on the right type of floor for your home or a particular area of your home. Research shows that homes with solid hardwood floors improve the marketability of a home. This results in higher resale prices as compared to houses without hardwood floors.
