Don't count calories. That will just make you stress out, and stress will mess with all of your systems (including your digestive system, which might slow down your metabolism).
But good job exercising - most people can't do it. Any exercise improves your metabolism.
Try to only eat when you are hungry and work out a little (even if it's walking) and you should be fine!

Here's some important weighted hula hoop exercise information that I think you should know about before you start using a hula hoop for exercise. I'm also going to tell you the exact reasons why you need to avoid the typical "kids" hula hoops.
1. You want a weighted one because the added weight slows the rotations down so that it's easier to spin around you. If you got a light kid's one, it would probably end up falling to the ground immediately. You can't get much exercise out of it if it keeps going to the ground after 1 spin. It's useless for adult exercising.
2. The ideal weight is between 4-5 pounds. It should be 41-42 inches in diameter. The added inches to the diameter also helps to slow down the spinning rotation, thus allowing for a more consistent twirl around your waist.
3. The prices range quite a bit. You can get them for as little as at stores like Wal-Mart and it can go up to or so not including shipping charges if you buy online. Look around and consider it an investment in yourself. Don't compare these to the cheap ones. Those things suck.
4. I consider the rubber foam plastic ones the best out of the bunch. You surprisingly have a lot of choices to choose among.
5. If you go to a store, don't just buy it without testing it out. Get a feel for it. I made the mistake of buying a cheap kid's one without testing it out. I got home and I couldn't even twirl the thing around me twice.
6. Devote 10 minutes a day (however you want, non-stop or 1 minute at a time) to hooping. You'll find this exercise gives you some really good toning as well as helps to develop your curves between your waist and hips.
