How to Go Sledding
Article by Ronald Finkley
Sledding is now primarily a recreational activity that takes place in wintry, snowy areas and involves the use of a vehicle of some sort known as a sled. However, that was not always the case. Sledding dates back as far as the 1870s and was to assist in traveling or hauling goods over ice and snow ridden areas.
Sledding has evolved over the years and today can be seen in snowy neighborhoods everywhere. To go sledding you need only a few essential items. You will need a sled, snow, warm clothes, a hill, and in some cases parental supervision. Sled riding is a very simple and fun activity for a wintry day. All you need to do is find a hill or incline of some sort and make sure that you dress warm. You next need to pick a sled, which there is a variety of. When picking a sled you have a plethora of choices.
You could choose a toboggan, which is an elongated sled that rests on the snow without runners and is usually made from wood or plastic. One of the more popular choices is a saucer. The saucer is round like a contact lens and made of plastic or metal. Another option would be a steel runner sled or flexible flyer.
This sled is a little more advanced because you can actually steer it. The flexible Flyer is made of wood and has steel runners on the bottom. And of course we can not leave out the old reliable inflatable tube. The inflatable tube is generally donut shaped and is very light weight.
An important factor of sledding is in fact the weight of the sled. One thing to remember is that the lighter the sled is the faster you will be able to sled. So if you have a need for speed then the inflatable tube would be a great choice. If you are more concerned with safety you would want the Flexible Flyer because of its steering ability.
Something else you will want to be aware of when sledding is that the first ride down the hill will be the most difficult and important. This will determine the path the rest of the sleds will take and with each trip down the hill it can become icier and more slippery. The most imperative thing is to maintain your safety. Always make sure that the bottom of the hill is not at a road or body of water. You want a clear area to slow your sled so that your first ride will not be your last.
