I would like to exercise using a weighted hula-hoop. I would like to try the hoop first because the weights vary. I can only find them online..........does anyone know of a store near Chicago that I can try one?
Best answer:
i live near wichita, ks, and i couldn't find one in a store to save my life, but my local gym uses them so i could try them there first. i bought one and it's about 4 pounds. it's plastic and the inside is kind of ridged. when i do it a lot, it tends to cause bruises, but in my opinion, i think it's very effective and i totally love it! if you do buy one though, i would look for one that is covered in foam. the ones at my gym are covered in foam and they aren't as painful. lol, but i have a pretty high pain tolerance level and so mine doesn't bother me, i just got it since it was cheaper

Weighted Hula Hoops VS Regular Hoops
Article by Mike Smith
If you are thinking about getting a hula hoop and losing some weight then make sure you understand the difference in weighted hoops and regular hoops. Believe me there is a huge difference in the two. This article will help shed some light on which one you should purchase and why.
If you are new to using a hula hoop and have never had much luck getting one to actually work then a weighted hoop is for you. The added weight makes it much easier to get it going and keep it that way. The down side to this is that it takes much less work for you to actually get the hula hoop going. It also takes much less to keep it spinning. Don't get me wrong you can still get a great workout from a weighted hoop and I would highly recommend that you start with one and then slowly work your way towards lighter hoops. Make it a gradual process! Take it one day at a time.
If you have used a hula hoop in the past and never seemed to have a problem getting it going and keeping in there then you can try one that is not weighted. It will take much more energy to get your hoop spinning and even more energy to keep it spinning.
So remember if you are a beginner, then go for a weighted hoop and work you way towards a lighter one. If you are a pro then get a lighter model for a much more vigorous workout. Using a hula is so much fun and once you start the time really flies by!
