Golden Safety Rule For Bench Pressing That Could Save Your Life

Article by Dean Blackstone

Bench pressing is one of the most exciting exercises for anybody to do. There is nothing like the feeling of sliding under the bar, gripping that cold steel and developing that adrenaline to make the lift to stop the bar from coming down and crushing you. It's a feeling of do-or-die (even if the weight isn't necessarily that crushing and even if you are training with people who're there to stop the bar pinning you, I'm talking about the feeling of having to make the lift - or else). But that's not what I'm talking about in this article. This article is about something else. It's about a common mistake people make when they begin bench pressing and experimenting, and it's certainly a habit many people pick up from people at the gym and it's one which can cause incredibly serious accidents - even kill you, so pay attention to what I'm going to say, because it may just save your life:

Never, ever bench press with a thumb-less grip. (Thumb-less means thumbs going the same direction as the fingers - over the bar, rather than the opposite way under and around like you'd grip anything.)

Listen - you wouldn't hold a bottle of beer with a thumb-less grip, and the consequences of dropping a bottle of beer are far less serious than if you were to drop a heavy barbell on yourself. You may see some people doing it, but, if they won't listen to reason and wrap their thumbs around the bar, it's only a matter of time before they have a serious accident.

I've seen many clips on YouTube of people who, for whatever reason, have gotten into the habit of bench pressing with a thumb-less grip and have had accidents. What happens is horrific and surprisingly fast, even though you are expecting it from the title of the clip, it shocks you. The bar literally slips or rolls away from the fingers because the thumbs aren't there to stop it, and within a split second it's slammed down full on the lifter, badly bruising or breaking ribs.

If you drop the bar, there's no escape, and no time to react at all, and if it lands on your throat it will likely break your neck or crush your windpipe - and it wouldn't take much weight to do either, so don't think bench pressing light will be any safer.

I advise you to take a look yourself on YouTube and see just how horrific it all is, and if that's not enough to put you off, then, on your head be it - probably literally.I believe the only people who have any kind of excuse for bench pressing without using thumbs are those who don't have thumbs - and that doesn't excuse their lack of concern for safety, still.

To all you budding benchers out there - I hope you take my advice.
