Is the body fat percentage on a digital weight scale accurate?

Question by Heather L: Is the body fat percentage on a digital weight scale accurate?
The weight scale I have tells you your weight, body fat percentage, and the percentage of water in your body. I don't understand how it can give an accurate measure of body fat percentage, or even water percentage, if you're just standing on it with your feet.

Best answer:
It is probably not very accurate in absolute terms but it will tell you if you are gaining or losing fat.

2 very important things that you must not overlook when losing weight and body fat

Article by Martin Rushforth

Here are 2 very important things to consider when losing weight and body fat successfully:

1) Eating the right kinds of foods

Even though eating less total calories is the key way to lose weight and body fat, eating the right kinds of foods can really help to make your diet easier, more satisfying and seem like less of a trial. Let's assume your body burns around 1700 calories per day and you only eat 1000 calories for a ten day period. You will undoubtably lose weight but clearly you will also lose weight if that 1000 calories was made up of chocolate, fizzy drinks and cheeseburgers.

It doesn't mean that it would be satisfactory to eat those types of foods in that way for ten days because those types of foods would certainly leave you want more due to their high sugar content. They also do not take up much room in your stomach because they are so dense in volume.

You will actually end up becoming hungrier much faster and feeling much less satisfied than if you had eaten meals that were high in nutrients such as fresh fruit and vegetables or lean meat, chicken or fish.

The total amount of calories you eat is always the key factor that will always determine if you lose or gain weight or body fat but it's the kinds of food you eat that will determine whether you feel satisfied or not and happy while you're losing weight and body fat.

2) Setting An Outcome Goal

If you do not set yourself an outcome goal then you will never know when you get there, so one of the crucial factors in any weight and fat loss diets is to set yourself that can be measured.

On average it is quite possible to lose a couple of pound per week so with this in mind if you want to lose a whole stone of body fat then you need to give yourself a 7 week plan to lose it.

So now you have a goal then you can monitor your progress. For instance if by week four you have only lost a pound you know something is not working with your diet s o you need to review it and try do something else.

Without that regular monitoring of your progress you will not know if you are on track so set that clear outcome and time scale of when you want to achieve your desired body weight.
